Iodine changed my life. Around 2020, I began experiencing brain fog, painful breasts, a lower than normal body temperature, an inability to tolerate the cold, cold hands and feet, and an inability to breathe with ease. Of course, I would have to overcome other health issues in the future (because I was unaware), but let’s focus on the iodine for now.
Researching about my painful breasts, led me to my discovery of iodine. Now, I had actually read about iodine when researching Johanna Budwig’s cancer protocol in 2018 (because I was preparing for my mid-40’s and I plan early). One of the first nutraceuticals Budwig said to take daily is Lugol’s Iodine. Because I was exploring colloidal silver, bitter apricot seeds, and vegetable juicing for the first time (and I was on a budget), I shelved the idea of iodine for later, but in hindsight I wish I’d started it immediately.
Fast forward to 2020, I read Suzanne Sommers’s book “Breakthrough”, because I’d visited medical doctors a few times and they were zero-help — the medical doctors I visited were utterly unconcerned with helping me and I wouldn’t understand just how far they were going to not help me until years of research later. Thankfully, Suzanne Sommers’s book helped me with female health in the 40s. It was during the reading of her book that I rediscovered iodine and that was when I remembered Johanna Budwig’s recommendation to take Lugol’s iodine daily — so the informational puzzle pieces were starting to fit together.
Not long after reading Suzanne’s book, I decided to start taking Lugol‘s iodine because at that point I recognized that my breast pain, low body temperature, cold hands and feet, and brain fog were interconnected with my iodine deficiency. Also, I was already taking selenium and a variety of organic vitamins and minerals, so Lugol’s iodine was the new addition to my nutraceutical cornucopia.
I started taking 5% Lugol’s iodine just two drops per day, which is the general recommendation for an initial loading dose. I did this so I could see how my body would react. After about four days of taking two drops, I felt a slight burning sensation in my thyroid, which is a very important organ located in the area of the throat (if you want additional information on the thyroid, research it), so I stopped taking iodine for a couple of days.
FYA: the burning sensation was my thyroid trying to suck up as much iodine as possible, because I was deficient at the time. My thyroid needed a break so I gave it one.
After two days, I started using Lugol’s again. This time, after a week, I no longer experienced the burning sensation, so I continued with the two drops for an additional week. The next week, I increased my load to four drops per day without incident. The next week, I increased my load to six drops per day without incident and then I continued with eight drops per day, as a rule.
By this time, I noticed that my feet and hands were no longer cold and my breast pain was starting to subside. My mental concentration came back and I had no brain fog. I had mental clarity, so then I knew the stories I read about Lugol’s iodine were true.
What ailments does Lugol’s iodine treat?
First, please note that iodine is concentrated in women’s breasts and ovaries, and in men —the prostate, and in both sexes — the thyroid.
Lugol’s iodine treats cystic breasts (oftentimes a precursor to breast cancer), reduces estrogen dominance, Fibromyalgia, autoimmunity disorders, hormone imbalance, low testosterone, endometriosis, bone loss, triggers apoptosis (death) in cancer cells, tooth decay, hair loss, hypothyroidism, Hashimoto’s disease, Graves disease, hyperplasia (a precursor to prostate cancer), erectile dysfunction, flushes out toxic heavy metals, and Lugol’s iodine corrects an underperforming human metabolism, which assists with weight management. I’m sure I’m missing other ways that Lugol’s iodine heals the human body, but you can research it.
Iodine will detox your body of fluoride, chlorine, bromide and heavy metals. Chlorine, fluoride, and bromide will destroy your thyroid and cause the aforementioned hypothyroidism, Hashimoto’s, and Graves disease. In fact, chlorine, fluoride, and bromide will displace iodine anywhere iodine is needed in your body, and this iodine-displacement is what causes all the aforementioned ailments and diseases.
Like I said before, a few of the symptoms for iodine deficiency can include constipation, weight gain, sensitivity to cold, fatigue, dry skin, joint pain, forgetfulness, depression, anxiety, breast pain (also a symptom of estrogen dominance), and more.
What can you do to help yourself?
1.) Self educate.
2.) Take personal responsibility for your health.
3.) Take Lugol’s iodine along with selenium, vitamin K, D3, Vitamin C, magnesium, potassium, iron, and B-complex. Depending on your diet, you may be able to get some of these vitamins and minerals from your food, but unless you’re eating a whole food plant-based diet you’re probably not getting enough of these vitamins and minerals.
Important Note: Also, do your research on how much you can take of selenium, vitamin K, iron, and D3, so that you don’t take a toxic dose.
4.) Don’t eat store-bought bread of any kind (or even at a restaurant) because all that bread contains potassium bromine and what did I say about the bromines?
5.) Get a filter for your shower.
6.) Stop swimming in chlorinated pools.
7.) Stop brushing your teeth with fluoride toothpaste.
8.) Use natural substances like baking soda, vinegar, and hydrogen peroxide to clean your house and produce.
9.) Get a water distiller — cook with and drink distilled water. (distilled water is the best kind of water to drink and anybody who tells you different is lying to you.)
10.) Stop buying cases of bottled water because the plastic contains endocrine disruptors that will harm your thyroid, breasts, ovaries, brain, and prostate.
11.) Stop using soaps, lotions, or candles that contain parabens or phalates, because they are known endocrine disruptors. (This means no more Bath and body Works products.)
12.) Stop using perfume and start using organic essential oils.
On that note…
Is Lugol’s iodine toxic?
My answer is EMPHATICALLY no no no no no. Lugol’s iodine (in moderation) is nontoxic for most people. Just like Vitamin C is non-toxic, but it can cause issues, in excess. Just like your body excretes vitamin C through the urine, iodine is also excreted through the urine. I have taken up to 30 drops (diluted in distilled water) of a 5% Lugol iodine solution just to see what would happen and nothing happened.
Side Note: If you have Hashimoto’s or Graves’ disease, then you must introduce Lugol’s Iodine slowly. Check out this article by Dr. Izabella Wentz, PharmMD for hypothyroidism support.
Other ways to use Lugol’s iodine
I also paint my body with Lugol’s iodine. If you have breast pain, prostate pain, joint pain, or pain around your ovaries, then paint those areas with Lugol’s iodine. Paint moles with Lugol’s.

When you start to feel a cold virus germinating in your nose, dilute a few drops of Lugol’s with distilled water and drop the solution in your nose with pipette and hold it for about a minute and do that for about 10 minutes and you’ll knock out any kind of norovirus. If you get food poisoning, dilute 30 drops of Lugol’s in water and drink. Wait and Observe. Repeat if needed.
Using Lugol’s Iodine to Treat Food Poisoning

Addendum: I am a fan of the National Institute of Health (NIH). This organization very rarely publishes information that I would debate. Almost all NIH articles are to the point and accurate. Having said that, here is an excerpt from an iodine debacle article published by NIH. This scenario is a perfect example of what NOT to do:
“This event involved an adult patient with Graves’ disease who was admitted to the hospital with thyroid storm. The physician prescribed 4 drops of Lugol’s solution to be given orally every eight hours. The intended dose of 4 drops would require approximately 0.2 mL of Lugol’s solution. But this patient was accidentally given an entire 100-mL container of the solution in a single dose, which amounted to a total of 5 g of free iodine. Acute toxicity of Lugol’s solution is related to its iodine content,1 although the high potassium concentration can cause extreme irritation of the mucosal membranes.2Patients with an iodine overdose can experience metabolic acidosis, renal failure, hypotension, circulatory collapse, and death. This patient received more than a potentially lethal adult dose of free iodine (2 to 4 g).1Although his condition deteriorated and required intervention to manage the overdose, the patient recovered” (Grissinger, 2015).
First, don’t introduce excessive iodine to a person challenged with Graves’ or Hashimoto’s disease until health is somewhat restored with the nutraceutical combo I listed above. Second, the NIH-cited patient was erroneously given 2000 drops of iodine in one serving. I don’t see how the patient was given that many drops, because iodine is strong stuff, unless someone gave 2000 drops to the patient intravenously?

The rule of thumb in anything is ‘moderation, never excess, and proceed with utmost caution.’
